After the University of Wisconsin women’s volleyball team discovered that private photos and videos were being shared online, they took to the court against Michigan State.
The University of Wisconsin women’s volleyball team played their next game just 24 hours after topless locker room snaps were leaked online.
Police at the University of Wisconsin are investigating how members of the school’s national champion women’s volleyball team’s intimate images and videos were shared publicly without their permission.
According to a statement from Wisconsin’s athletic administration released on Wednesday, players notified campus police as soon as they learned the images had been made public.
The statement did not mention the date or location of the images or videos. Still, later online photos appeared to show the players flashing their breasts after winning the Big Ten championship the previous season.
The players involved have not been named; however, there are further images and a video clip online.
Police are ‘investigating several offenses, including publishing sensitive photos without consent,’ according to the school statement.
Marc Lovicott, a spokesman for the University of Wisconsin Police, confirmed the inquiry on Thursday. Due to the ongoing investigations, Lovicott refuses to provide more information.
There are no pending criminal investigations involving the volleyball players.
UW Released An Official Statement
In response to the unauthorized distribution of intimate images and videos of the women’s volleyball team, the University of Wisconsin stated on Wednesday.
According to a statement, the athletes are not under investigation for misconduct and will be given access to the right services to help their well-being.
The Wisconsin State Journal said that the pictures and video were taken in the locker room using a team member’s phone.
According to the statement, the pictures and videos were never intended for public viewing and were disseminated without the team’s permission. UW and UWPD declined to make additional comments, citing the ongoing inquiry and the student-athletes right to privacy.
‘We are aware that UW volleyball student-athletes’ private images and videos are making the rounds online despite never being meant for public consumption. The unapproved sharing constitutes a serious and unjustified infringement of the student-privacy, athlete’s possibly in violation of both university rules and legal obligations. The UW-Madison Police Department was contacted by the student-athletes when they learned about the images that were going around. UWPD is looking into a number of offences, including the sharing of private images without authorization. The volleyball student-athletes are not being looked into by UWPD for wrongdoing in this case. Supporting our student athletes is our top concern, and we are giving them the necessary services and resources.’
