In Nashville, Smith was learning to write and record music and at the same time he played in clubs and bars. He also played guitar for some artists, all of them local. After about five years of living in Nashville, he decided to move back to Texas.

By 2006, he had released three more albums. He released Memory Rd. in 2004, Pockets of Pesos in 2005 and Live Like a Lonestar the following year. Each of his albums was a success and they all sold better than the previous one. He continued to grow and become famous and in 2008 he made his first White House performance during the George W. Bush administration. He also traveled to the Middle East to play for US troops deployed in Iraq and Kuwait.

The following year he released his fifth studio album titled Don’t Listen to the Radio and in 2011 he released his sixth album, Posts and Prisoners. However, it was his seventh studio album that took the world by storm, the album he titled Dirt Road Alley dropped in 2013 and reached number fifteen on the US Billboard charts. The album also ranked eleventh on the US Indie Chart

In 2015 Smith announced that he had signed a label deal with Broken Bow Records. The following year, he released his eighth and most successful studio album, titled Remington. The album topped the US Top Country Albums chart upon its debut. In 2017, he released his ninth album, When Good Guys Win
