Although we all know him as Nene Hilario, Huston Rockets man Maybyner Rodney Hilário was born on September 13, 1982 in São Carlos, Brazil. Growing up alongside her older siblings Maykon Hilario and Mayaramy Hilario, she was given the name Nene (baby) and that’s how it stuck.
Like most kids growing up in Brazil, Nene’s first love was football, which he played so well that many expected him to make a career out of it. However, taking advantage of his height and body, he decided to become a basketball player.
After deciding to play the game, Nene began attending the Escola de Basquete Meneghelli in his hometown of Brazil, but he would soon stop coming only to return a few weeks later, crying with his mother. Upon request, Nivaldo Carlos Meneghelli Junior, the school’s founder, was told that the family could no longer afford the school fees to keep Nene at school. Meneghelli allowed Nene to continue coming for free and the big kid stayed there for seven years.
In 1999 he had already started his professional career, playing for Vasco da Gama in Brazil until 2002, when he was invited to the NBA preparatory camp. He was selected in the draft as the 7th overall pick by the New York Knicks, making him the first Brazilian basketball player to be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft.
NBA Career
His professional NBA career was not to begin with the New York Knicks, traded for the Denver Nuggets with whom he played from 2002 to 2012. Despite injury issues, he signed a five-year contract with the team in 2011, worth $67 million.
In 2008, his career was cut short after he had testicular cancer, but the tumor was surgically removed. As a very strong Christian, Nene believes her cancer and other struggles were just tests of God. The experience has brought him closer to God and he appreciates life more.
The Washington Wizards would be Nene Hilario’s next destination after his trade in 2012. He played for the club until 2016 when he moved to his current club, Houston Rockets.
Besides playing in the NBA, Hilario also plays for the Brazilian national team. He received his first invitation in 2001 to the Goodwill Games, where he helped the team win the bronze medal. The same year, he played with the team in the FIBA Americas Championship, winning the silver medal.
Family
Nene Hilario’s parents are Jose Paulo Hilario and Carmen Hilario, who raised him with their two other children, Maykon Hilario and Mayaramy Hilario. Her mother is a retired nurse.
On February 14, 2009, Nene Hilario got married to Lauren Prothe Hilario. The two men first met at his friend and manager, Alex Santos, whose wife played volleyball with the future Mrs. Hilario. Nene and Lauren started dating in 2007 and two years later decided to become husband and wife in a ceremony held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Denver.
Just as Nene has her own survival story, so does his wife. Having suffered from a migraine on the left side of her head, it was later discovered that Lauren Prothe Hilario had a benign brain tumor which led to surgery to remove it.
Nene and his wife were blessed with a son, Mateos Hilario, born in 2012.
