Billy Donovan showed great resilience despite falling out of the game as a basketball star; he did a few stunts as an NBA coach. Born as William John Donovan in Rockville Center, New York; Billy was born to American parents Bill Donovan Sr. and his wife Joan Donovan on May 30, 1965. He started playing basketball at an early age and was considered a gym rat who played basketball at any opportunity. He went to St. Agnes Cathedral High School where he led the team to win the Long Island Catholic High Schools Championship as a senior.
For his youth career, Donovan joined Providence College on an athletic scholarship. Having finished his college career in 1987, Donovan earned call-ups from U.S. teams and tournaments. as well as the All-Big East first team. Subsequently, he joined the 1987 NBA Draft where he was selected by the Utah Jazz as the 68th player selected in the draft.
Upon joining the Jazz, Donovan was waived by the team ahead of the 1987/88 regular season. Following the waiver, the guard signed up with the Wyoming Wildcatters, who compete in the Continental Basketball Association (ABC) while seeking another opportunity to feature in the NBA. He was a member of the New York Knicks and Rapid City Thrillers until 1989 when he decided to pursue a coaching career.

Shortly after leaving Rapid City Thrillers of the CBA, Donovan tried a bit of work as a stockbroker. After an unsuccessful career in Wall Street investment banking, he ventured into basketball coaching. He began his coaching career as an assistant college basketball coach. He joined his former high school coach, Rick Pitino, at the University of Kentucky, where he served until 1994. During his time there, Billy led the team to the last four in the conference in 1993.
After his Kentucky’s success, Billy was recruited by Marshall University as the head coach of the struggling basketball team with a 9-18 record in the 1993/94 season. Donovan’s team continued to improve; becoming Southern Conference Southern Division champion in 1995. He also led the team to a 35-20 record in two seasons before leaving in 1996.
Billy joined the University of Florida in 1996 following the resignation of head coach Lon Kruger. During his 19-year career in Florida, Billy Donovan led the team to NCAA Tournament titles twice, in 2006 and 2007. He helped the team win the SEC Championship six times, the SEC championship and reach the final four of the tournament. Four-time NCAA Regional Championship.
